Down East is a multimedia company based in Rockport, Maine, devoted to celebrating "Maine at its Best". Founded in 1954, the company’s flagship publication,
Down East: The Magazine of Maine, has become synonymous with the state itself and today ranks as Maine's premier magazine with more than 100,000 subscribers around the world. Today, Down East delivers not only the best available coverage of lifestyle, destination, and "good curiosities" in Maine, but it also zooms in on hot topics for Mainers and those who love the Pine Tree State.
Since 1977, Down East has also published books by the state's best authors and artists, with a list of some 775 books published to date. This year, Down East Books has been named Publisher of the Year by the New England Independent Booksellers Association (NEIBA).
Among this year’s titles are A Passion for Sea Glass by C.S. Lambert; At Home by the Sea: Houses Designed for Living at the Water’s Edge by Bruce Snider and photographed by Brian Vanden Brink, and By A Maine River: A Year of Looking Closely by Thomas Mark Szelog and Lee Ann Szelog. The 2008 book, What’s in a Picture? Uncovering the Hidden Stories in Vintage Maine Photographs is drawn from the perennially popular column in Down East magazine, and written by the magazine’s deputy editor, Joshua F. Moore. Always strong in the area of children’s books, Down East’s popular picture books include The Train to Maine written by Jamie Spencer and illustrated by Rebecca Reed, and Spirit of the Snowpeople by Diane Keyes, with illustrations by Helen Stevens. In 2007, the company introduced a new imprint, Shooting Sportsman Books.
Two more magazines are published from the company's Rockport, Maine, offices. Shooting Sportsman caters to the wing-shooting enthusiast and fine-gun collector, while Fly Rod & Reel addresses the enthusiasms of those with a passion for fly-fishing.
In addition, www.downeast.com has become the preferred interactive web site for all things Maine, offering travel information, videos, pictures, blogs, real estate listings, an on-line store, and more.
