Back in 1954, Duane Doolittle launched Down East: The Magazine of Maine as a kitchen-table enterprise. Now the magazine is the flagship product of Down East Enterprise, Inc., a company owned by the Fernald family of mid-coast Maine. Today, Down East delivers not only the best available coverage of lifestyle, destination, and "good curiosities" in Maine, but it also zooms in on hot topics for Mainers and those who love the Pine Tree State.

Down East Books has published 750 books over four decades. Among this year's titles are Greg Currier's The Colors of Lobstering, John Christie's The Story of Sugarloaf, and Our Point of View: 14 Years at a Maine Lighthouse by Lee Ann and Thomas Mark Szelog. In 2007, the company introduced a new imprint, Shooting Sportsman Books.

In June 2007, the company launched a redesigned website, which celebrates "Maine at its best" and all of the Down East brands and products. Two more magazines are published from the company's Rockport, Maine, offices. Shooting Sportsman caters to the wing-shooting enthusiast and fine-gun collector, while Fly Rod & Reel caters to those with a passion for fly-fishing.

Presently, Down East Enterprise has 73 employees. The offices - and a book sales area in the cozy, fireplaced reading room - are located in a former summer estate known as Roxmont. Look for our distinctive, gray-shingled, building on Route 1 in Rockport, Maine
