A veteran observer of the NABF, Jaysun Jackie, swears today's crowd is the largest Saturday morning/early afternoon he's ever seen. Jackie should know...he's been working backstage at the blues festival for years.

The spot had it all: dramatic topography, shore frontage, granite ledges, towering pines, vernal pools, and salt marsh.

One thing there's of which there's no shortage is dancing couples. The NABF dance floor at the south side of the stage is packed. Bernadette Dempsey, of Surry, and Ed Kizer, of Holden, whirled and twirled "West Coast" style during the last jam of Smokin' Joe Kubek, whose set ended about 1:30 p.m.

"It's just great music," says Bernadette, who described her dance partner Ed as a "dancing demon."

Joe and Sherry Thompson of Roque Bluff, on the other hand, didn't even wait to reach the dance floor before getting down; the couple embraced just after entering the gate, and slow-danced during the final song of the NABF's opening act, the Detroit Women.

This the couple's eighth or ninth festival, Sherry says.

What keeps them coming back?

"The party," says Joe.
