Jeff and Jack

Jeff Swanson bought his first "real" camera — a Pentax K1000 — in 1984, and ever since has been trying to, in his words, "figure out how this whole photography thing actually works."

Without a formal education in photography, he instead took the trial-and-error approach, a process that he claims was vastly improved through digital photography.

Swanson tries to capture images of places and things that provoke thought and emotion.

"Over the years of sharing my photography with friends and family, I have found that my images also provoke thought and emotions for other people as well," he said.

He decided in 1997 to begin sharing his work with the public and has since displayed work throughout Maine. In November, 2006 he opened a studio in Portland's Congress Building.

Swanson is originally from Connecticut and has also lived in Florida and Colorado.

"Growing up, we had a camp on Lake Wesserunsett in East Madison, Maine," he said. "As a child I have always loved Maine and I now reside in Portland with my wife Sue and two dogs."
