What's new in Maine today, August 27, 2008? It's back to school for thousands of Maine youngsters today. The big yellow buses are rolling, so adjust morning driving habits accordingly. There will soon be a new way to vacation in the western mountains of Maine. The Maine hut trail project has $1 million to its credit thanks to Clem Begin and his wife. The couple donated to help jumpstart the construction of 12 overnight shelters on the 180-miles of remote trails. Keeping the western air clean is also on the minds of state leaders. Maine, and eleven other states, have joined to sue the federal government over violations of the Clean Air Act. Zipcars have come to Maine and are a new way to reduce the number of cars on roadways. Bates has joined three other Maine colleges to offer rental cars, known as Zipcars, to student drivers. The cars can be rented for $7 per hour or $60 per day. Bates, Bowdoin, Colby and the University of New England offer the cars for students' use. What's new in Maine today, August 20, 2008? One if by land, two if by sea tolls? In Maine? An Auburn bell has been linked to the Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere. Three Olympic rowers — count 'em, THREE — traveled from Maine to Beijing to stroke for America. On another note, a new study reveals Maine has the highest obesity rate among the New England states. What's new in Maine today, August 18, 2008? Mainers Anna Goodale and Elle Logan helped the U.S. Rowing team win gold in China. The Auburn Police Department is tooling around in Segways to see if the two-wheeled contraptions can become a fuel-efficient mode of transportation for fighting crime. Thunderstorms led to flash flooding in the Maine towns of Minot and Hebron August 16, closing several state roadways in the two towns.
