Take Yourself Down to the Ballpark, Portland
They don’t include Maine in Red Sox Nation for nothing — baseball is huge here. But since Fenway is a few hours drive, at least, check out the club’s affiliated minor league team right here in Portland. Join Slugger and the rest of the Portland Sea Dogs, plus special guest David Ortiz (on rehab assignment through the 23rd), at Hadlock Field (271 Park Ave.) as they take on the Connecticut Defenders starting at 7 p.m. It’s NASCAR Night as well, presented by NAPA Auto Parts and FOX23, so look for special giveaways during the game and special cars on display in the front plaza. Fun fact: Maine has had a role in professional baseball for more than a century. Since 1901, nine Maine cities have hosted a minor league team, including Calais, Augusta, Bangor, Waterville, and Old Orchard Beach. The Sea Dogs are Portland’s first team since 1949, the last season of the Portland Pilots. The gates for all games open one-and-a-half hours prior to game time — that gives you plenty of time to fill up on Sea Dogs Biscuits [see page 80] and hot dogs. Parking for all games is at 995 Congress Street at the Maine Medical Center lot or on-street wherever you can do so legally. 800-936-3647. www.portlandseadogs.com
