A Month of Fun: Wednesday, July 23

Listen to a String Orchestra, Acadia National Park

Back when rusticators ruled Bar Harbor around the turn of the nineteenth century, gala events were part of a Maine summer for these well-heeled visitors. Theatrical performances were held regularly at the classic Building of Arts, and music colonies like the one in Seal Harbor regularly sponsored performances around the island. Most of the old-school rusticators are gone now (Martha Stewart being a notable exception) but the outdoor concerts remain, largely thanks to the efforts of the Bar Harbor Music Festival. This month-long affair offers a brass ensemble, a pops concert, and even a performance of Carmen at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor. But arguably the most impressive event will be on July 23, when the Bar Harbor Festival String Orchestra gives a performance at the outdoor amphitheater in Blackwoods Campground. Bold mountains, bold cliffs, bold performance. It’s an event that would have impressed even Mr. Rockefeller. Best of all it doesn’t cost a dime (though a donation is appreciated).
